Field Engineering Triage FAQ
How do I fix 'SuperQ cannot find spectrometer' on Malvern Panalytical systems?
Record the exact error message displayed in SuperQ or on the front-panel status indicators. The alert indicates lost communication between the host PC and the spectrometer. On PW2400, Axios, and early Zetium systems, an aging onboard backup battery can allow saved configuration settings to clear during a power outage or breaker cycle. RDS services the hardware and restores communication on-site or in our shop without unnecessary full-rack replacement. Call our experts directly at 630.229.3859 for immediate engineering triage.
What causes 'Error: Unexpected X-rays off / Exception: A safety error has occurred (Error code: 9, Error channel: 3, 5, 6, or 7)' on Malvern Panalytical Epsilon XRF systems?
On Malvern Panalytical Epsilon 1, Epsilon 3, Epsilon 3XLE, and Epsilon 4 spectrometers, Error: Unexpected X-rays off / Exception: A safety error has occurred with Error code: 9 (Op Error code: 9) on Error channel: 3 (LIDSWL/LIDSWR), Error channel: 5 (LIDLOCKL1/LIDLOCKL2), Error channel: 6 (LIDLOCKR1/LIDLOCKR2), or Error channel: 7 (X-Safe status bits: Safety contactor (A), Safety contactor (B)) indicates a lid-lock safety interlock fault. Newer machines are built cheaply with a heavier no-lead lid and struts we think are overkill (like putting 1-ton dually leaf springs on a riding lawnmower)—we don't know when exactly they changed it, but we started to hear a difference around COVID when we dropped them into the junk pile at the local recycling facility and they made a much cheaper clang than we were used to. Because of that, the lid bends over time and causes constant lid-lock errors. The fix is bending the lid back straight with your muscles, like a caveman. You can also drop your system log files into our Epsilon System Inspector for automatic fault analysis.
Why does a power outage trigger communication loss on PW2400, Axios, and early Zetium spectrometers?
Earlier spectrometer generations rely on an onboard backup battery to retain configuration settings when main power is off. When this battery depletes over years of operation, cycling the main breaker clears the saved settings, causing SuperQ to report "Cannot find spectrometer". While PANalytical updated this on newest revision systems, OEMs frequently condemn older controllers and quote $20,000+ for replacement. RDS services the backup power circuit and restores communication without full assembly replacement.
What causes High-Voltage Generator trips on Axios and Zetium XRF systems?
High-voltage trips represent safety interlock breaks or regulation timeouts. The most frequent causes are external: secondary cooling water flow dropping below safety limits (<3.5 L/min from the Haskris chiller), cooling water return over-temperature, high-voltage cable socket arcing, or degraded dielectric oil in the generator tank well. In most cases, the fault can be resolved without replacing the high-voltage generator assembly.
Why shouldn't I repeatedly power-cycle a non-communicating spectrometer?
When SuperQ cannot connect, cycling the main breaker repeatedly forces inrush current transients into the power supplies and risks thermal stress on the X-ray tube filament. Contact an engineer before repeatedly cycling main power.
Does RDS repair existing hardware or only sell complete assemblies?
Unlike the OEM—who routinely quotes total assembly replacements with extended backorders—RDS troubleshoots and repairs existing spectrometer hardware in-house and on-site. We also maintain tested replacement assemblies in stock ready to ship today via FedEx Priority Overnight.
What information should I have ready when calling for triage?
To help our engineers immediately diagnose your fault, please note: (1) your exact instrument model (e.g., Axios & Zetium XRF, PW2400), (2) the exact text of the software error or front-panel status indicator, and (3) whether the fault occurred at idle, during kV ramp-up, or during sample change.
Are replacement parts covered under warranty?
Yes. All pre-tested replacement parts, Haskris chillers, generators, tubes, and detectors supplied by RDS are fully covered under our comprehensive warranty and verified to meet or exceed original factory specifications.
