The spectrometer controller reported a timeout or positional error while cycling the sample changer (turret, loading arm, or carousel). In everyday laboratory operation, this triggers when optical flag sensors fail to register cup movement within the programmed interval, a pneumatic transfer cylinder has low line pressure, or a deformed sample cup causes physical friction in the guide track.
⚠️ The OEM Claim vs. Field Reality
The OEM will often quote an expensive $15,000–$25,000 whole-carousel replacement and weeks of downtime. In our field experience, over 90% of sample changer faults are caused by misaligned optical sensors, worn pneumatic solenoid seals, or guide adjustments that can be resolved on-site without replacing the entire assembly.
🛠️ The RDS Solution
RDS field engineers perform on-site optical sensor alignment, pneumatic pressure tuning, and drive linkage repairs. We also stock tested exchange loader assemblies, drive motors, and sensor boards for immediate emergency dispatch.

Field Engineering Triage FAQ

Why shouldn't I repeatedly power-cycle a non-communicating spectrometer?

When SuperQ cannot connect or the communication bus locks up, cycling the main breaker forces unregulated power transients into the Single Board Computer (SBC) and NIOS controller. In our field experience, repeated cycling frequently corrupts on-board flash calibration parameters and risks filament shock in the X-ray tube.

Does RDS offer component-level repair or only board replacement?

Unlike the OEM—who routinely quotes total assembly replacements with 8–12 week backorders—RDS specializes in direct component-level repair and firmware unbricking for SBCs, NIOS boards, and HT generator controllers. We also maintain tested exchange boards ready for same-day courier shipment.

What information should I have ready when calling RDS for triage?

To help our engineers immediately diagnose your fault, please note: (1) your exact instrument model (e.g., Axios 1kW/4kW, Zetium, X'Pert PRO), (2) the exact text of the software error or front-panel LED pattern, and (3) whether the fault occurred at idle, during kV ramp-up, or during sample change.

Are replacement parts covered under warranty?

Yes. All pre-tested replacement boards, Haskris chillers, generators, tubes, and detectors dispatched by RDS are fully covered under our comprehensive warranty and verified to meet or exceed original factory specifications.
